Something Wicked This Way Comes

Something of an auspicious occasion, we’ve been involved in some seriously fruitful R & D sessions with Derlot’s Alexander Lotersztain at our Auckland showroom this week.

Alex and the product development team at UFL got together to brainstorm pipeline projects and put the finishing touches on collaborative pieces which will be launched to market in the coming months.

With the development of new product comes the bonds that grow from partnership and creative cooperation. The outcome is next-level design; something that wildly exceeds expectations and hurls new product into the market where before there was just the same old.

Alex has been named top 10 most influential designers by Scene Design Quarterly, and one of 100 most influential designers worldwide in &fork by Phaidon. He is the design adviser in a number of government and private projects, regularly presents at design events and conferences, and judges on design panels throughout Australia.

Salone del Mobile 2016

Nani_lattice_2As a group of furniture professionals at UFL, our muse is the international circuit of furniture fairs, of which Salone del Mobile in Milan is the absolute darling. We visit every year; to seek inspiration and draw from new trends, new ideas and new products. We see our role in the milieu, as that of curators; selecting only the choicest offerings from simply thousands of new items, bringing them home to New Zealand to share with our local cliental.

Salone de Mobile is growing. It seems like the industry is adhering to its former glory and this year Milan was simply bursting out of her skin. Outstanding events and happenings were woven into the entire fabric of the city, from tiny apartments in Brera to the historical buildings within the city’s centre. Even the post-industrial warehouses of Ventura Lambrate held startling exhibitions of new products, alongside the delicious art galleries and the main Rho fairgrounds themselves. Salone 2016 truly surpassed our expectations with the vast array of superb installations, breath-taking new releases and magnificent parties.

Here are some of the highlights from Milano 2016:

Sneak peek – Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014

It’s just about time to head off on our annual pilgrimage to the Milan Furniture Fair.  The Salon Internazionale del Mobile is the highlight of our year and the event that sustains and inspires us for the balance of the year. Here’s a sneak peek from a couple of our favourite brands as to what’s in store for us for this year’s fair.

Sancal will release their Gráfica collection with eight brand new products. We are especially excited about Rafa Garcia’s REW sofa and bench system.

This is the new Ema collection from Enea. Designed by Lievore Altherr Molina, this multipurpose stacking chair and stool has been in the works for a few years now and we can’t wait to see the final product now in production.

And while we are focusing on soon to be released products, here’s a sneak peek into Derlot’s new Cup seat. Photography by Florian Groehn. Coming soon!

2013 Milano Report

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is just the most important place on the planet to be if you’re a designer or even a humble furniture professional like me.  From its origins in 1961, the fair has become the most important point of reference for our industry and that’s why we journey to Milan each year, to discover new trends, catch up with old friends, and soak up the buzz of Milan. With a total attendance of some 324,093 people, the fair really does have a life of its own.
Contained within these pages is our pick of the best of Milan 2013. The best stands, the best new products, the best new ideas and the future trends in styling and colour. Click here to read our 2013 Milano Report.
We’re always very excited to attend Salone Internazionale del Mobile and this year lived up to all our expectations. But we’re equally excited when the new products arrive in our showroom and look forward to sharing them with you later in the year.

We love Prisma!

Prisma, brand new from Derlot in Australia, is a collection of angular lounges and ottomans that can be configured together to create an endless array of shapes.  Available in four modules, each Prisma seat has an angular asymmetric form so they can be clustered together. Stacked together they can form long sofas, small armchairs or banks of seating. Their shapes allow them to be positioned in the centre of the room, against the walls or in corners. Small wooden triangular Prisma tables nest neatly into the seats.

We absolutely love Prisma and can’t wait to see it used!
